Atrial Septal Defects
Atrial Septal Defects (ASDs) are a type of congenital heart defect that occur when there is a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the two upper chambers (atria) of the heart. This hole allows oxygen-rich blood from the left atrium to mix with oxygen-poor blood from the right atrium, which can cause the heart to work harder than normal. In maritime context, ASDs can be a concern for divers and submariners, as the increased pressure underwater can exacerbate the effects of the defect.
