Belay

Belay is a nautical term that refers to the act of securing a rope by winding it around a cleat, pin, or bitt. This is done to prevent the rope from slipping or running out of control. Belaying is an essential skill in sailing and other maritime activities, as it allows sailors to control the tension and movement of the ropes that control the sails and other equipment. The term can also be used as a command to instruct someone to secure a rope in this way.
