By The Board

By The Board is a nautical term that refers to something that has been officially cancelled or terminated. The term originated from the practice of writing the names of crew members on a slate board to keep track of who was on board the ship. When a crew member died or was discharged, their name was erased from the board. This practice was later extended to include any action or event that was cancelled or terminated. In modern times, the term is still used in the maritime industry to refer to the cancellation of a voyage, the termination of a contract, or the removal of a crew member from a ship.
