Chafing Gear

Chafing gear is a protective covering used to prevent damage to ropes, lines, and hawsers from rubbing against rough surfaces such as rocks, pilings, or the edges of a ship's deck. It is typically made of a durable material such as canvas, leather, or synthetic fibers and is wrapped around the area of the rope or line that is likely to come into contact with the rough surface. Chafing gear is particularly important in situations where the rope or line is under tension, as this can increase the risk of damage from friction. Without chafing gear, ropes and lines can quickly become worn and weakened, which can compromise their strength and safety.
