Frictional Resistance

Frictional resistance is the force that opposes the motion of a ship through water due to the friction between the water and the hull of the ship. It is one of the major components of total resistance that a ship experiences while sailing. Frictional resistance is influenced by various factors such as the roughness of the hull surface, the viscosity of the water, the speed of the ship, and the length of the wetted surface of the hull. To reduce frictional resistance, ship designers use various techniques such as hull coatings, bulbous bows, and streamlining of the hull shape.
