Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Greenhouse gas emissions refer to the release of gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat and contribute to the warming of the planet, leading to climate change. In the maritime context, greenhouse gas emissions are primarily produced by ships through the burning of fossil fuels. The shipping industry is responsible for approximately 2.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and this number is expected to increase as global trade continues to grow. The International Maritime Organization has set targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the shipping industry, including a 50% reduction in emissions by 2050 compared to 2008 levels.
