Harmful Algal Blooms

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are rapid and excessive growths of algae in marine or freshwater environments. These blooms can produce toxins that are harmful to humans, marine mammals, fish, and birds. HABs can cause a range of negative impacts, including fish kills, shellfish poisoning, and respiratory problems in humans. They can also lead to economic losses for industries such as fishing and tourism. HABs are often caused by nutrient pollution, such as from agricultural runoff or sewage discharge, and can be exacerbated by climate change. Monitoring and early detection of HABs is important for protecting human health and the environment.
