Jack Tar

Jack Tar is a term used to refer to a sailor or seaman. The term originated in the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom in the 18th century and was used to describe the tar-like substance that sailors would get on their clothing while working with ropes and rigging. Over time, the term became synonymous with sailors themselves. Jack Tars were known for their hard work, rough language, and rowdy behavior. They were often seen as a lower class of society, but were essential to the operation of ships and the success of maritime trade. Today, the term is still used to refer to sailors, particularly in historical contexts.
