Lightship

A lightship is a type of navigational aid that is essentially a floating lighthouse. It is a stationary vessel equipped with a powerful light that is used to guide ships through hazardous areas, such as shallow waters, reefs, and other navigational hazards. Lightships are typically anchored in areas where it is not possible to build a lighthouse, and they are manned by a crew of sailors who maintain the vessel and the equipment. The light on a lightship is usually visible for several miles, and it is an important aid to navigation for ships that are traveling in the vicinity. Lightships were once a common sight in many parts of the world, but they have largely been replaced by automated buoys and other modern navigational aids.
