Satellite Communication (SatCom) Systems
In the maritime context, Satellite Communication (SatCom) Systems refer to the technology used for communication between a ship and a remote location, typically a land-based station, via satellites. These systems are crucial for maintaining communication links for both operational and social purposes on vessels that are out at sea, far from terrestrial communication networks. SatCom systems use geostationary satellites to provide a constant link, enabling real-time communication, which is vital for navigation, safety, and emergency response. They also facilitate the transmission of data for weather forecasting, vessel tracking, and fleet management. The two main types of maritime SatCom systems are Inmarsat and Iridium. Inmarsat provides a reliable, global coverage except for the polar regions, while Iridium covers the entire globe, including the poles. Both systems support voice and data services, but their performance, cost, and suitability vary depending on the specific maritime application.
