Ship Security Officer
A Ship Security Officer (SSO) is a person on board who is responsible for the security of the ship, including the implementation and maintenance of the ship's security plan. The SSO is appointed by the company and is responsible for liaising with the Company Security Officer (CSO) and the Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO). The SSO's duties include conducting regular security inspections of the ship to ensure that appropriate security measures are maintained, coordinating the implementation of the ship security plan with the ship's master and the CSO, and enhancing the security awareness and vigilance on board. The SSO also has the responsibility to report any security threats or incidents to the CSO and the appropriate authorities. The SSO must have knowledge of current security threats and patterns, recognition and detection of weapons, dangerous substances and devices, and the ability to conduct security inspections, including the use of security equipment and systems.
