Sulfur Cap

Sulfur Cap refers to the limit on the amount of sulfur content in fuel oil used on board ships. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a global sulfur cap of 0.50% m/m (mass by mass) on fuel oil used on ships, which came into effect on January 1, 2020. This regulation aims to reduce the amount of sulfur oxide emissions from ships, which are a major contributor to air pollution and can have negative impacts on human health and the environment. Compliance with the sulfur cap can be achieved by using low-sulfur fuel oil, installing exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers), or using alternative fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG).
