Aids To Navigation

Aids to Navigation (ATON) are devices or systems external to a vessel or aircraft specifically designed to assist navigators in determining their position or safe course, or to warn them of dangers or obstructions to navigation. ATON include a wide range of devices such as buoys, beacons, lighthouses, daymarks, radar reflectors, and GPS. These devices are used to mark channels, warn of hazards, indicate the location of navigational obstructions, and provide information on the location of safe water. ATON are essential for safe navigation and are maintained by government agencies responsible for maritime safety. The International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) provides guidelines for the use of ATON worldwide.
