Angioplasty

Angioplasty is a medical procedure used to widen narrowed or obstructed blood vessels, including those in the heart. In the maritime context, angioplasty may be performed on crew members or passengers who experience a heart attack or other cardiac event while at sea. The procedure involves inserting a catheter with a small balloon at the end into the affected blood vessel. The balloon is then inflated to widen the vessel and improve blood flow. In some cases, a stent may also be inserted to help keep the vessel open. Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed on an outpatient basis, allowing for a quicker recovery time and return to duty for crew members.
