Area Contingency Plans

In the maritime context, Area Contingency Plans (ACPs) are strategic documents designed to guide responses to significant incidents, particularly oil spills and hazardous substance releases, in specific geographic areas. These plans are developed by Area Committees, which are composed of representatives from federal, state, and local agencies, as well as industry and environmental groups. The ACPs outline the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders, identify sensitive areas that need protection, and provide detailed strategies for responding to incidents. They also include information on available resources, such as equipment and personnel, and procedures for coordinating responses. ACPs are critical for ensuring effective and efficient responses to maritime incidents, minimizing environmental damage, and protecting public health and safety. They are regularly updated to reflect changes in risks, resources, and best practices.
