Beaufort Scale

The Beaufort Scale is a system for measuring wind speed based on visual observations of the sea surface. It was developed in 1805 by Sir Francis Beaufort, a Royal Navy officer, and is still in use today. The scale ranges from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane force), with each number representing a specific range of wind speeds and corresponding sea conditions. The Beaufort Scale is an important tool for mariners, as it allows them to estimate wind speed and sea conditions without the need for instruments. It is also used by meteorologists to describe wind conditions in weather forecasts.
