Bilge Keels

Bilge keels are longitudinal structures that are attached to the outside of a ship's hull, running parallel to the keel. They are designed to reduce a ship's tendency to roll in heavy seas by increasing its hydrodynamic resistance to rolling. Bilge keels work by creating a hydrodynamic force that opposes the rolling motion of the ship, thereby reducing the amplitude of the roll. They are particularly effective at reducing the rolling motion of ships with a high center of gravity, such as container ships and bulk carriers. Bilge keels are commonly used on commercial vessels, but are less common on smaller vessels and pleasure craft.
