Block Coefficient

Block Coefficient is a measure of the underwater volume of a ship's hull compared to the total volume of the ship. It is the ratio of the underwater volume of the ship to the volume of a rectangular block having the same overall length, breadth, and depth as the ship. Block coefficient is an important parameter in naval architecture as it gives an idea about the fullness of the ship's form. A higher block coefficient indicates a fuller form, which means the ship will have more displacement for a given length. However, a higher block coefficient also means more resistance and lower speed. On the other hand, a lower block coefficient indicates a slimmer form, which means less displacement, less resistance, and higher speed.
