Bulbous Bow
A bulbous bow is a protruding bulb at the bow (front) of a ship that modifies the way the water flows around the hull, reducing drag and increasing speed and fuel efficiency. The bulbous bow works by creating a wave that interferes with the bow wave created by the ship, reducing the total wave resistance. This results in a reduction in the power required to propel the ship through the water, which in turn reduces fuel consumption and operating costs. The bulbous bow is a common feature on modern ships, particularly those designed for speed and efficiency.
