Burgee
A burgee is a distinguishing flag, often triangular shaped, that is flown from the mast of a yacht or other vessel. It is used to identify the vessel's owner or club affiliation, and can also be used to signal specific messages. Burgees are typically smaller than a ship's ensign or national flag, and are often brightly colored with distinctive designs or symbols. In yacht racing, burgees are used to indicate the starting line and to signal penalties or protests. The use of burgees dates back to the 18th century, when they were used by British naval officers to identify their vessels.
