Calk

Calk is a process of sealing the seams of a ship's wooden deck or hull to make it watertight. This is done by driving oakum, which is a fiber made from old ropes, into the seams and then sealing it with a waterproof material such as pitch or tar. Calking is an important process in shipbuilding as it prevents water from entering the ship and causing damage or sinking. It also helps to improve the ship's stability and durability in rough seas.
