Carrier's Responsibility
In maritime context, Carrier's Responsibility refers to the legal and operational obligations that a carrier, typically a shipping company, has towards the cargo and the cargo owner during the transportation process. This responsibility begins from the moment the carrier takes possession of the cargo for transport and ends when the cargo is delivered to the designated recipient. The carrier's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, ensuring the safe and timely delivery of cargo, providing a seaworthy vessel, properly loading, stowing, and securing the cargo, and taking reasonable care to avoid damage to the cargo. In case of any damage or loss to the cargo, the carrier may be held liable unless they can prove that they took all necessary precautions to prevent such damage or loss. The extent of a carrier's responsibility is often outlined in a contract of carriage, and may also be governed by international conventions such as the Hague-Visby Rules or the Hamburg Rules.
