Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in plants and algae that is essential for photosynthesis. It absorbs light energy from the sun and converts it into chemical energy that is used to produce glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water. Chlorophyll is also found in some bacteria and is responsible for their ability to carry out photosynthesis. In the maritime context, chlorophyll is used as an indicator of the presence of phytoplankton, which are microscopic plants that form the base of the marine food chain. By measuring the amount of chlorophyll in the water, scientists can estimate the amount of phytoplankton present, which can provide valuable information about the health of the marine ecosystem.
