Clean Water Act

The Clean Water Act (CWA) is a federal law enacted in 1972 that regulates the discharge of pollutants into the navigable waters of the United States, including lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, and coastal areas. The CWA sets water quality standards for all contaminants in surface waters and makes it illegal for any person or entity to discharge any pollutant from a point source into navigable waters, unless they have a permit to do so. The law also provides funding for the construction of sewage treatment plants and regulates the discharge of pollutants from industrial facilities. The CWA has been amended several times since its enactment to address new challenges and emerging pollutants.
