Convection Currents

Convection currents refer to the movement of fluids (liquids or gases) due to differences in temperature and density. In the maritime context, convection currents play a significant role in ocean circulation and weather patterns. The sun heats the surface of the ocean, causing the water to expand and become less dense. This warm water rises to the surface and creates a current that moves away from the equator. As the water cools, it becomes denser and sinks to the bottom, creating a current that moves towards the equator. These convection currents help to distribute heat around the globe and regulate the Earth's climate. Additionally, convection currents can also affect the movement of ships and submarines, as they can create turbulence and eddies in the water.
