Coronal Mass Ejections

Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are large-scale eruptions of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun's corona into space. These events can release up to 10 billion tons of matter that can travel at speeds of up to 3,000 km/s. When CMEs interact with the Earth's magnetic field, they can cause geomagnetic storms that can disrupt satellite and communication systems, power grids, and navigation systems. CMEs are often associated with solar flares, but they can also occur independently. The study of CMEs is important for space weather forecasting and understanding the Sun-Earth connection.
