Porous Medium

In maritime context, a porous medium refers to a material that allows water or other fluids to pass through it due to the presence of interconnected pores or voids. Porous media can be found in natural environments such as seabeds, where sediments and rocks have pore spaces that allow water to flow through them. In maritime engineering, porous media are used in the design of coastal structures such as breakwaters and revetments to dissipate wave energy and reduce erosion. The effectiveness of porous media in coastal protection depends on factors such as the size and shape of the pores, the permeability of the material, and the hydraulic conditions of the surrounding environment.
