Decompression
Decompression is the gradual reduction of pressure experienced by a diver or a submarine crew when returning to the surface from a deep dive or depth. During a dive, the body tissues absorb nitrogen gas which can cause decompression sickness or 'the bends' if the ascent is too rapid. To avoid this, divers and submarine crews must follow decompression procedures which involve ascending slowly and stopping at specific depths for a period of time to allow the nitrogen to be released safely from the body. Decompression can also refer to the process of reducing the pressure inside a pressurized compartment or vessel to allow safe exit or entry.
