Derrick


In maritime context, a derrick is a lifting device composed of a vertical mast and an inclined boom that is used to hoist and lower heavy objects, such as cargo or equipment, onto or off of a ship. The mast is typically supported by guy wires and the boom is attached to a hoist system that can be operated manually or with a motor. Derricks are commonly used in ports and on ships for loading and unloading cargo, as well as for moving heavy equipment and supplies. They are also used in offshore drilling operations to lift and lower drilling equipment and supplies onto and off of drilling platforms.
