Ecosystem Services
Ecosystem services refer to the benefits that humans derive from natural ecosystems. These benefits can be divided into four categories: provisioning services (e.g. food, water, timber), regulating services (e.g. climate regulation, water purification), cultural services (e.g. recreation, aesthetic enjoyment), and supporting services (e.g. nutrient cycling, soil formation). In the maritime context, examples of ecosystem services include the provision of fish and seafood, regulation of climate through ocean currents, and cultural services such as tourism and recreation. The sustainable management of marine ecosystems is crucial for the continued provision of these services.
