Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is a nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions reduction technique used in most gasoline and diesel engines. EGR works by recirculating a portion of an engine's exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders. In the maritime context, EGR is used in marine engines to reduce the emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere. This is particularly important in the shipping industry, where large amounts of fuel are consumed, leading to significant emissions. The EGR system in marine engines is designed to withstand the harsh marine environment and the high sulfur content in marine fuels. It helps in reducing the formation of NOx by lowering the combustion temperature. The recirculated exhaust gases have the ability to absorb heat during combustion, thus reducing the peak temperature. This process is crucial in meeting the stringent emission regulations set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The use of EGR systems in marine engines contributes to the overall efforts of the maritime industry in reducing its environmental impact.
