Fatigue

Fatigue is a physical and mental state of extreme tiredness and exhaustion caused by prolonged and intense physical or mental activity, lack of sleep, or prolonged exposure to harsh environmental conditions. In the maritime context, fatigue is a significant safety concern as it can impair a crew member's ability to perform their duties effectively and efficiently, leading to errors, accidents, and injuries. Fatigue can be caused by long working hours, irregular shift patterns, and inadequate rest periods. To prevent fatigue, maritime organizations must implement effective fatigue management policies and procedures, including regular rest breaks, adequate sleep, and appropriate work schedules.
