Fore And Aft

Fore-and-aft refers to the direction parallel to the centerline of a ship, as opposed to athwartships. Sails set on the fore-and-aft line are those that are set parallel to the keel of a ship, such as jibs, staysails, and mainsails. Fore-and-aft rigging is a type of sailboat rigging that uses a mast that is stepped closer to the bow and a boom that extends aft. This rigging configuration allows for better maneuverability and sail control in a variety of wind conditions. Fore-and-aft can also refer to the location of a ship's engines, which are typically placed in the aft section of the ship, in contrast to earlier ships that had engines located amidships or in the forward section.
