Garbage

Garbage in maritime context refers to any waste generated on board a vessel, including food waste, plastics, paper, metal, glass, and other materials. Proper management of garbage is essential to prevent pollution of the marine environment. International regulations require vessels to have a Garbage Management Plan (GMP) that outlines procedures for collecting, storing, processing, and disposing of garbage. The GMP also specifies the types of garbage that can be discharged at sea and the conditions under which this can be done. Garbage that cannot be discharged at sea must be stored on board until it can be offloaded at a port reception facility. Failure to comply with garbage regulations can result in fines and other penalties.
