Garboard Strake

Garboard Strake refers to the first (or sometimes second) strake (continuous line of planking) on the bottom of a wooden or composite boat hull, adjacent to the keel. It is the most important strake in the hull construction as it provides the foundation for the rest of the planking. The garboard strake is usually wider than the other strakes and is fastened directly to the keel. It is also often thicker than the other strakes to provide additional strength and protection against damage. The garboard strake is critical to the overall strength and integrity of the hull, and any damage or deterioration to this strake can have serious consequences for the safety and seaworthiness of the vessel.
