Global Positioning System (GPS)

In the maritime context, the Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system that provides geolocation and time information to a GPS receiver anywhere on or near the Earth. It is a crucial tool for navigation and positioning in maritime operations. The system operates independently of any telephonic or internet reception and does not require the user to transmit any data. In maritime navigation, GPS is used for determining the ship's position, for the piloting of ships and boats, for search and rescue operations, and for tracking and monitoring the movement of ships. It provides accurate and reliable positioning information, enabling safer and more efficient navigation. The GPS system can also provide speed and course over ground, and by linking the GPS to other onboard systems, such as the automatic identification system (AIS) or the electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS), it can significantly enhance the safety and efficiency of maritime operations.
