Human Rights

Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world, simply because they are human. These rights are inherent, inalienable, and universal, meaning they cannot be taken away, given up, or denied to anyone, regardless of their race, gender, nationality, religion, or any other status. In the maritime context, human rights are particularly important for seafarers who work and live on board ships for extended periods of time. Seafarers have the right to fair treatment, safe working conditions, and access to medical care, among other things. The maritime industry must ensure that these rights are respected and protected, and that seafarers are not subjected to any form of discrimination or abuse.
