International Hydrographic Organization

The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) is an intergovernmental consultative and technical organization that was established in 1921 to support safety of navigation and the protection of the marine environment. The IHO is the authoritative body for hydrography, promoting the use and development of hydrography for the safety of navigation and all other marine purposes. It sets standards and provides a framework for the effective collection and dissemination of marine geospatial data. The IHO's work supports all aspects of civil, commercial and defence activities in the maritime domain, including navigation, coastal zone management, marine science, maritime boundary delimitation, maritime safety and security, and marine spatial data infrastructures. The IHO also encourages the greatest possible uniformity in nautical charts and documents and works to enhance the status of hydrographic surveying and nautical charting worldwide.
