Keel (plate)

In maritime context, a keel plate is a flat steel plate that runs longitudinally along the bottom centerline of a ship's hull. It is the first part of the ship's hull to be constructed and serves as the foundation or backbone of the vessel. The keel plate is typically the thickest and strongest plate in the ship's hull and provides the necessary strength and stability to the vessel. It also helps to distribute the weight of the ship evenly and reduces the amount of rolling and pitching in rough seas. The keel plate is an essential component of the ship's structure and is often laid down during a keel-laying ceremony to mark the start of the ship's construction.
