MARPOL Annex V
MARPOL Annex V is an international maritime treaty that sets out regulations and guidelines for the prevention of pollution by garbage from ships. The annex prohibits the disposal of most plastics, including synthetic ropes, fishing nets, and plastic bags, as well as other forms of garbage such as paper products, rags, glass, metal, and food waste, into the sea. It also requires ships to maintain a Garbage Management Plan and to keep a Garbage Record Book, which must be available for inspection by port state authorities. The aim of the annex is to protect the marine environment and human health by reducing the amount of garbage that is discharged into the sea.
