Methane Hydrates
Methane hydrates, also known as methane clathrates, are ice-like structures that form when methane gas is trapped within water molecules under high pressure and low temperature conditions. These structures are found in abundance in marine sediments and permafrost regions of the world's oceans. Methane hydrates are considered a potential future energy source, but their extraction and use pose significant environmental and safety challenges. In addition, the release of methane from hydrates due to warming ocean temperatures could contribute to climate change and ocean acidification.
