Microorganisms

Microorganisms are tiny living organisms that are too small to be seen with the naked eye. They include bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and algae. In the maritime context, microorganisms play an important role in the marine ecosystem. They are involved in the cycling of nutrients, decomposition of organic matter, and production of oxygen. Some microorganisms can also cause harmful algal blooms, which can have negative impacts on marine life and human health. In addition, microorganisms can be found in ballast water and biofouling, which can lead to the introduction of invasive species and damage to marine infrastructure.
