Net Tonnage

Net tonnage is a measure of a ship's total interior volume and is calculated by subtracting non-revenue-earning spaces such as engine rooms, crew quarters, and storage areas from the gross tonnage. It is used to determine a ship's port dues, registration fees, and safety rules. Net tonnage is an important factor in determining a ship's carrying capacity and operating costs. It is also used to determine the number of passengers a ship can carry and the amount of cargo it can transport. Net tonnage is an essential measurement for shipowners, port authorities, and maritime regulators.
