Rips


Rips, also known as rip currents, are strong, narrow currents that flow outward from the shore and can extend hundreds of feet beyond the breaking waves. They are caused by the water that has piled up on the shore as waves come in, seeking a way to return to the sea. Rips can be dangerous to swimmers and surfers, as they can quickly pull them away from the shore and into deeper water. It is important to be aware of the signs of a rip current, such as a channel of churning, choppy water, an area with a noticeable difference in water color, or a line of seaweed or debris moving steadily seaward. If caught in a rip, it is recommended to swim parallel to the shore until out of the current, and then swim back to shore.
