Rivet

A rivet is a permanent mechanical fastener used to join two plates or pieces of material together. In the maritime context, rivets are commonly used in shipbuilding to join steel plates together to form the hull and other structures. Riveting involves heating the rivet and inserting it through a hole in the plates to be joined. The end of the rivet is then hammered to form a second head, which creates a permanent joint. Riveting was a common method of shipbuilding until the mid-20th century, when welding became more prevalent.
