Ship's Master
In maritime context, a Ship's Master, also known as a Captain, is the licensed mariner in ultimate command of the vessel. The Ship's Master is responsible for its safe and efficient operation, including navigation, crew management, and ensuring that the vessel complies with local and international laws, as well as company and flag state policies. All persons on board, including officers and crew, other shipboard staff members, passengers, guests and pilots, are under the captain's authority and are his ultimate responsibility. The Ship's Master makes decisions on handling the ship in all situations, the loading, discharging and securing of cargo, the ship's stability, and the maintenance of the ship's vital systems. The Ship's Master also oversees the work of the ship's officers and crew, and ensures the safety and security of the ship, its crew, and its cargo. In emergencies, the Ship's Master has the authority to take any necessary actions to save the ship and its occupants.
