Smothering Lines

Smothering lines are hoses or pipes used to supply inert gas to cargo tanks in order to prevent the formation of a flammable atmosphere. The gas is usually nitrogen or carbon dioxide, and it is pumped into the tank until the oxygen concentration is reduced to a level where combustion cannot occur. Smothering lines are an important safety feature on tankers and other vessels carrying flammable or combustible cargoes.
