Inert Gas

Inert gas is a gas that does not undergo chemical reactions under a set of given conditions. In the maritime context, inert gas is used to prevent explosions on board oil tankers during the transportation of crude oil and other petroleum products. Inert gas systems work by replacing the air in the cargo tanks with inert gas, which reduces the oxygen concentration and prevents the formation of explosive mixtures. The most commonly used inert gas is nitrogen, which is produced by either burning diesel fuel or using a membrane system to separate nitrogen from the air. Inert gas systems are required by international regulations and are an important safety feature on board oil tankers.
