Sounding Lead

Sounding lead is a tool used to measure the depth of water in a maritime context. It consists of a lead weight attached to a line marked at intervals. The lead weight is lowered to the seabed and then raised to take a measurement of the depth of the water. This measurement is taken by reading the markings on the line where the water level meets it. Sounding leads have been used for centuries and are still used today, although modern technology has largely replaced them with electronic depth sounders. However, sounding leads are still used in situations where electronic equipment is not available or reliable.
