Sounding Line

A sounding line is a length of rope or wire that is used to measure the depth of water. It is weighted at one end and marked at intervals. The line is lowered over the side of a ship until it reaches the bottom, and the depth is determined by the markings on the line. Sounding lines have been used for centuries to create nautical charts and maps, and they are still used today in modern navigation. They are an essential tool for ensuring the safety of a ship and its crew, as well as for conducting scientific research on the ocean floor.
